From the Principal

Dear families,

Welcome to Week 7. Across the school, our students are currently working diligently on their end of semester assessment tasks. From Math inquiry tasks, to research reports in HaSS, to writing procedural texts in English - the students sure are busy applying what they have learnt this term! I am very impressed by their commitment to learning and producing high quality work. Congratulations go to our students and to our committed team of educators at St Maria Goretti. Semester 1 Report Cards will be distributed to families in Week 10. 

National Reconciliation Week takes place between 27 May and 3 June each year.

Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2021, More than a word: Reconciliation takes action, urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

To learn more about Reconciliation or begin a conversation in your home, with family or friends you may like to do the following:

• Listen to the song ‘Took the Children Away’ by Archie Roach

• Watch the SBS Documentary ‘Servant or Slave’ which details stories of Women of the Stolen Generation

• Watch ‘The Rabbit Proof Fence’

• Read segments of the ‘The Bringing Them Home Report’ the 1996 National enquiry into the Stolen Generations

• Read the 2020 Family Matters Report to understand the current state of affairs

Staff efficacy 

Leadership when described as a character strength is; "when you are good at organising things for groups of people, working well with everyone and bringing out the best in others". Bringing out the best in others is the true essence of a leader, knowing what you have as far as your strengths and then bringing out the strengths in others. This image below is how leadership is modelled at St Maria Goretti, coming together as individuals to share our true colours, our gifts and character strengths so that everyone in our community can flourish... teachers, parents and students.

Prep 2022

Prep enrolments for 2022 are well underway. This year we are adding to the transition to school plan for our new Prep children. Our transition program begins next Thursday with our ‘Pathway to Prep Fun Morning’ where new and existing families are invited to meet our staff, take a tour of the school and share morning tea with us. Children 3+ will participate in a variety of activities in the early years classroom including robotics, reading, craft and finger gym rotations. We look forward to welcoming our visitors to our wonderful school. 

Talwood Athletics Carnival

We have been very busy practicing high jump, long jump, shot put, ball games, sprints, relays and more in preparation for the athletics carnival at Talwood on the 18th of June. Information about the carnival will be sent home in the coming days.

Life and Learning in the Library

Students and teachers have been reading the CBCA Notable books and students will be voting for their favourite book in Week 9 as part of the BILBY Awards.

The Bilby Awards are the children’s Choice Awards organised by the Queensland branch of The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA). This award is a wonderful opportunity for young people to exercise their voice about what they read, it is their very own book award. Students and teachers have been reading and sharing some of the CBCA Notable books and in a few weeks time they will be voting for their favourite book.

Class News Years 3-6

Welcome to Week 7! I cannot believe we are almost at the end of Term 1 already.

Over the last couple of weeks, the students have been busy working on their assessments to demonstrate their understanding of concepts covered this term.

In Religion this week, students had to create a visual representation of how they see The Holy Spirit and explain their artwork through answering questions. It was fantastic to see the students demonstrate their understanding of a concept through art.

Homework Awards - Term 1

Year 6 Fundraising

The Year 6's have begun fundraising for their end of year trip with a competition to guess how many lollies are in the jar. 

Each guess is 50 cents. Please see the office for your guess.

**Hint - there are between 50 and 550 lollies in the jar!

Other Year 6 fundraising:

The Year 6's are still accepting cans, bottles and poppers for the Containers for Change scheme. They can be dropped into the marked wheelie bins under the school.

Win State of Origin Tickets!

Raffle tickets were sent home to each family at the beginning of term. Please return them as soon as possible (even if not sold). There are more books available from the office if you would extras to sell. All proceeds will go to the Parent Partnership Forum.
